Individuals who have not yet filed their 2006 income tax returns have until April 15, 2010 to file and receive any tax refunds entitled to them. There is a three-year time limit to file a refund claim after the original due date of the tax return. The IRS announced that unclaimed income tax return refunds have reached $1.3 billion and are owed to about 1.4 million individuals who have not yet filed 2006 income tax returns.
Refunds will be held back if an individual has not filed tax returns for 2007 and 2008, and electronic filing cannot be used for refund claims. However, for a faster refund from a paper filing, taxpayers can elect to have the funds directly deposited into a checking or savings account.
